The Guardian, Raku bowl with lizard sculpture

Colored coper oxide glaze and clear glaze prior to raku firing. the piece is placed in a raku kiln and rapidly fired to 1800 deg. F.  The piece is pulled out of the kiln while red hot and placed in a combustion chamber.  Flammable material is added which quickly burns out all the oxygen in the air within the chamber.  The fires then pull oxygen from the oxide glaze leaving the pure copper and various coper oxides which add the green and coper colors.

The black coloring is unglazed areas which are infused by the smoke from the burning material.  This piece is in a private collection.
